How a Traffic Ticket will Affect your Utah Auto Insurance

By Steve Turner

When you are shopping for Utah auto insurance coverage, or if you already have a policy, it can be very beneficial to understand how your insurance provider calculates your rates. Providers use a number of factors to base these calculations upon. These factors include your age, your sex, the amount of coverage and deductibles you have or choose, your current auto claim history, and your driving record.

Utah uses a point system to follow how many traffic violations each driver has. Your record could contain points for violations such as running a red light, speeding, or reckless driving.

Insurance providers will review your driving record as part of the application process. You will be thought of as a high risk if you have a lot of points. Being a high risk to the provider will in turn prompt them to charge you with a higher premium rate.

To avoid having points added to your record because of a violation, see if going to driving school is an option. For some violations if you successfully complete the driving school then the violation will be dismissed and no points added to your record.

You can just choose to pay the ticket, but you will most likely see an increase in your insurance costs. If you chose to fight the ticket and lose, then not only will you have a rate increase but will also still have to pay the ticket and any court costs incurred.

You could see an increase in your rates for up to seven years if you do end up with points on your record. The amount of time that it will affect your rate will vary from insurance provider to provider. However, keep in mind that this is only one of the factors considered when determining your rate.

Consider requesting quotes from a number of providers if you do see an increase in your insurance rates. A quick way to do this would be to utilize an insurance comparison website where you are allowed to enter in your information once and then receive quotes from numerous providers in return.
