Auto Insurance explained

By Jeff Cline

What makes auto insurance so important to have? Drivers often ask this question. There are a couple of really good reasons to maintain your auto insurance. First, it is the law! The second and most important reason is that it could potentially protect your finances.

Lawmakers in every state believe it is important to maintain auto insurance and they have very valid reasons behind it. They have expensive fines and actions they take if you choose to ignore it. Still many people still ignore the laws set forth in regards to auto insurance.

These people who chose to ignore the laws can pay pretty big for doing so. This is why uninsured motorist coverage has become so popular for motorist. So many people have heard the horror stories of being hit by someone without insurance.

If you are uninsured and you have an accident it does not excuse you from paying the damages you cause. If you are at fault you will have to pay all damages, if you do not you could lose your driving privelages in many states. Besides having your car towed and impounded there are prety hefty fines for ignoring the law too.

There are basically 6 types of coverage you should know about when it comes to auto insurance. One that most states require is Bodily Injury Liability. This coverage is meant to cover any person that you cause injury to in an at fault accident. Due to the high cost of medical bills the states limits are usually not enough to cover the expenses most would incur.

If you would also like coverage for you and your passengers you would want to purchase PIP or Personal Injury Protection. Property Damage liability is another that the state may require and it covers damages done to property if you are at fault. This could include, structures, trees, lamp post and telephone poles.

If you want to protect your auto from a collision you would purchase Collision Coverage. Collision will cover your vehicle if any damage is done to it and it is your fault. If you want to be covered in case a tree should fall on your auto or hail damages you car you would want Comprehensive coverage.

Because so many people scrimp to lower their premiums it is always a good idea to get not only uninsured motorist coverage but under insured as well. That way if someone runs into you and they do not have adequate coverage to pay your damages your insurance company will take care of it for you.
