Car Insurance Guidelines for Snowbirds

By Chimezirim Odimba

Many people head for the sunshine states at the first sign of cold weather. Several will hop on an airplane and won't be seen again until the flowers begin to bloom. Houses are cars face the elements but the owners are long gone.

The thought of paying for car insurance for a full year for a car that will only be driven half of the year seems like a waste of money. Auto insurance is coverage when there is an accident. However, there is a good portion that is there to protect any damages to your car too.

There are several things that make up a car insurance policy. Such things as collision; liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and comprehensive coverage are also part of it. Everything except for comprehensive covers you if you are involved in an accident.

Comprehensive shields your motor vehicle from vandalism, flooding, fire, and theft. Things can take place even if cars are parked in a garage during your absence.

Phone your insurance company and ask them about this. Possibly you could postpone part of your insurance during your absence. Simply not paying anymore should not be considered.

Some states don't allow people to suspend a portion of their insurance coverage. It can't be done all the time since there is a bare minimum for insurance coverage. Therefore suspending it would almost be like cancelling it in some areas.

Once it was time to reinstate your insurance you would have many headaches involved. Some insurance companies are simply not willing to go through all this.

Another issue is this, if there is a loan against the car, it is required that you carry full coverage. Get in touch with the lien holder and see if they can offer you some advice. Possibly something else can be done.

If your insurer refuses your plea to provisionally defer your coverage, don't let the plan expire. This will bring about even greater issues later. Once there is a period with no insurance, it is hard to get it again. This will appear on your credit score as a negative entry. Furthermore, you won't be offered similar prices that you had before.
