Cheap Auto Insurance -- Overlooked Savings Opportunities

By Chimezirim Odimba

Are you looking for the cheapest auto insurance? Here are often-missed savings tips...

1. Many insurers will give you a discount if you are part of an auto club. Even though you shouldn't expect to attract huge discounts for this, each small discount you can get will add up to much when added to other such discounts.

2. Have you checked with the associations you belong to if they have discounts from any insurer? Insurers give these associations group discounts in the hope that they will in that one move attract many of their members to buy an auto insurance policy with them. So check, one of those associations might have discounts you can take advantage of.

3. Some insurers will give you a discount if a child on your policy is away at school and does not use the car at that period. If your child is in college then you should discuss with your agent about the possibility of getting this discount. I must point out, though, that some insurers do not give this discount.

4. There are cars that cost much more to insure. So as you check out the exceptional specs of the car you want to buy don't forget to ask costs too much to insure. Two things that will force you to pay more are a car's crash rating and theft rate.

In addition, it will also take much more to insure a car that is more costly to fix or repair. With a little diligence you can avoid buying a vehicle that will make you pay much more in extra premiums over a few years.

5. Joining a car pool will help you get a lower rate. Carpooling helps you reduce your mileage which is a strong factor in calculating your rate. And, the less your mileage, the better risk you are to an insurer.

6. Check if there is a group discount for company if it's a large one. If you've not asked, do. Insurance companies offer large organizations some discount in the belief that such would attract members of that organization.

7. Those who live in crowded areas are more likely to have one form of car accident or another when compared to people who live in rural sparsely populated areas. Rural areas get far cheaper rates because they are less exposed to risks of vandalism, theft, collision and others that are usually associated with urban areas. The more densely populated where you live is, the more difficult it will be for you to get really cheap auto insurance rates.

8. You might be able to bring down your rate if you take time to review your policy from time to time. Change is inevitable and happens without our permission but then we must NOT pay for things that such changes has relieved us of. A good example is a case where a couple leave their wedded daughter on their policy for months or even a few years just because they did not remember.

There are discounts you might have qualified for. You might as well have "outgrown" the need for certain coverage types. It would, therefore, do you a world of good to review your policy yearly or twice yearly. You might see a few things that are no longer necessary and save as you drop them.

9. Do your utmost to always ensure your policy does NOT lapse. You'll attract very expensive rates for a long time if this happens to you albeit by mistake. Don't make such a mistake if you're changing insurers because that's when this happens to many people.

To avoid a lapse, make sure that the new policy is fully in in force before you terminate the previous one. It appear to be simple but, take it or leave it, many people are paying higher rates today just because they were negligent in this.

10. Is it possible you have a car that you've not used for a long while? Is one of your cars been covered in the garage for up to six months because it's broken? Is this car still on your auto insurance policy or have you removed it?

Simple as this looks a lot of people so end up paying thousands in unnecessary premiums because they don't remember to remove such cars from their policy. Do you want affordable auto Insurance? If you made this kind of mistake then you can save yourself a lot of bucks by quickly removing an unused car or cars from your policy.

11. You could save several hundreds of dollars by simply getting and comparing quotes from not less than five insurance quotes sites. And, it will require just about 25 minutes on the whole.
